About Patricia

Patricia Murphy has worked in mental health for over 40 years. She initially trained as a general nurse and then went on to do a post registration qualification in mental health nursing. She has worked overseas and for the NHS in a variety of inpatient and community based settings for over 20 years before embarking on a course of study at Goldsmiths, University of London, which led to qualification as a fully accredited CBT Therapist with the British Association of Behavioural Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) in 2001.

Since then she has established a full time private practice specialising in the care of adult mental health. She is a registered service provider for major health insurance companies including  BUPA, AXA, AVIVA, Benenden Health  and WPA. She has a particular interest in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Anxiety disorders including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) , Health Anxiety, Panic Disorder and specific phobias.

She also works with Depression, Low self esteem, Perfectionism, Domestic Violence, Emotional dysregulation disorders, Childhood trauma including childhood sexual abuse and Anger Management.

Patricia is committed to the ongoing development of  skills necessary to work  as a culturally sensitive practitioner. She is  a former founder and co-chair of the BABCP Women & Gender Minorities Special Interest Group (SIG) and  continues to work collaboratively with colleagues in the BABCP Equality & Culture SIG to influence  organisational diversity and inclusion practices  and raise awareness of the mental health needs of ALL minoritized groups.

She hosts her own blog and  writes regularly for the BABCP membership magazine CBT Today on a variety of topics including poverty, the therapeutic effects of poetry and violence against women and girls.
